Kerry
Clower documented and took photos of this cemetery in April 2025
County
Road 1380, South of Alvord
Location: From the Hwy 81/287 bypass south of Alvord, take the Hubbard
Street exit. Turn south on Hubbard
Street for 1.2 miles to the intersection of CR 1380.
Turn left on CR 1380 and travel 1.6 miles to an oil field gate/cattleguard
on the right. The well is Clyde M.
Smith 1H and the gate is kept locked, so do not enter without permission of the
landowner. Philip Smith is the
current owner. About 150 yards
before the gate, you should have passed a sign on the right reading “Former
Site of Elm School”. The cemetery is located out in the field about 150 yards
east from the oil well road and about 30 yards northwest from the school sign.
Condition: The graves are under a large post oak tree and the area is
unfenced. It was overgrown and the two headstones were toppled and scattered
when I found them on April 21, 2025. There
are at least three other graves marked only with field stones.
A grandson of Rosa McDonald Smith had told him that at one time there may
have been ten or more additional graves, but I could find no signs of them on my
visit. Strangely, the last name on
the two stones was spelled differently.
Burials:
1.
McKneely, T. G.
Died June 17, 1882,
Aged 63 years (Stone has Masonic emblem and engraved
“HERE REST AN HONEST MAN”)
2.
McNeeley, Margaret
(born) 1847,
Died July 17, 1888 (Engraved with “Her Life was hid with
God”)
3.
Three marked, but
unknown graves
