King, Ziba 1847 1893 Father; Headstone with Mary (see line below) hopewell-086.jpg
Sent in by Kerry Clower kerryclower@embarqmail.com  "He does not have a veteran's marker. For many years, his family believed that he was a Confederate Vet that lost his arm to a Yankee cannonball. Ronald Womack helped me research him and learned in fact that he was born 8-14-1845 (or 1847?) in Saline County, Illinois. In 1864, he joined the 136th Illinois Infantry as a private, mustered out on 10-22-1864 in Camp Butler, Illinois. He joined the regular US Army on 8-14-1865 as a Sergeant in the 6th US Cavalry, dispatched to New Orleans, La, and on to Austin, Texas as its headquarters. In 1867, a decision was made to redeploy the 6th and divide them among the frontier forts in north Texas. This plan was enacted in October, 1868, but he had mustered out in August of 1868. Moved to north Texas were he married Mary Wariner. Received a wedding gift of 1000 acres of land in Wise County from his brother-in-law, James (Jim) Wariner. Died in Wise County of lung disease in 1893 at age of 48. Buried along with his wife, Mary, in the Hopewell Cemetery."
